Bodycam: Parking Lot Chase Ensues after Ariz. Police Officer Shot
An Arizona police officer was seriously wounded last week by a wanted man who opened fire as he left a convenience, kicking off a pursuit that ended with the fatal shooting of the suspect.
The shooting happened shortly before 3 p.m. Thursday as a man wanted on outstanding warrants exited a Circle K gas station convenience store in Maricopa, The Arizona Republic reports. The suspect—identified as Keith Tyler Prock—was confronted by an officer outside the store, and the incident was captured on the officer's body camera footage.
Prock began shooting at the responding officer, who was struck by the gunfire. A second officer at the scene began chasing after Prock, who continued shooting as he fled on foot.
A running gun battle ensued, and Prock is struck by gunfire from the second officer in the gas station's parking lot. An unmarked police cruiser that was pursuing from the parking lot also struck Prock while he was on the ground.
Prock was pronounced dead at the scene. The wounded officer was rushed to hospital and is in serious but stable condition.
"This incident is a stark reminder of the dangers our officers face every day to keep our community safe," Maricopa police Chief Mark Goodman said in a statement. "Thankfully, our officer survived, and their prognosis is positive. However, they sustained serious injuries that will take time to heal."
The shooting is under investigation by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office.
